A hotel inspired by history
Mondragon. The first-ever hotel allowed to open its doors in the historic city of Zierikzee. A true style icon, but more than that—this grand hotel offers all the comforts of a city inn. A place that welcomes travellers, warm, friendly, full of charm. An overnight stay at the Mondragon is a memory to savour. Enjoy great food, genuine friendship and good old-fashioned courtesy. That’s the spirit of Mondragon.
The hotel is named after Cristóbal de Mondragón, a 16th century Spanish general. In 1575, he besieged Zierikzee on behalf of King Philip II of Spain and took the city. His name has been linked to Zierikzee ever since. Back in the sixteenth century, Mondragon stayed in the Oude Haven. And now you can follow in his footsteps and stay in one of Zeeland’s most stunning locations. When you enter the historic centre, you pass through the beautiful Noordhavenpoort where Hotel Mondragon is waiting, on your right. We will unload your luggage, park your car and show you to your luxurious room or suite.
In Restaurant Cristó, the kitchen bustles with activity all day long. Chefs conjure up delectable dishes inspired by French cuisine (‘la bistronomie’) with a touch of the Basque Country where the town of Mondragon nestles at the foot of the eponymous dragon mountain. Our culinary team can’t wait to serve up an unforgettable experience! From your table in our authentic old-world restaurant you can watch the chefs at work, enjoy views of the harbour or pick a table overlooking our inner garden with fountain. A hand-picked selection of Classic European wines—delicious and deliciously affordable—may make choosing difficult. But our sommelier is on hand to advise. The ingredients on our menu are carefully selected and sourced locally: summer fish from the North Sea and Oosterschelde, and in the winter game from breath-taking Schouwen-Duiveland.
Stadscafé 't Gouden Elfje is a great place to have breakfast. Everything is freshly prepared and bursting with natural goodness. The perfect way to ease yourself into the day. Our lunch menu offers visitors to Zierikzee a mouth-watering selection of sandwiches and salads. And for those who like a more leisurely lunch, we have a special menu every day between twelve and two. Here at 't Gouden Elfje, time seems to stand still. The doorbell tinkles to tell us when new visitors arrive. To buy a tasty snack for on the road, enjoy coffee on the terrace, or take a souvenir home. And if you’re wondering why we’re called 't Gouden Elfje, come and see for yourself.
Your stay won’t be complete without a visit to the Heerenkamer, located in the tower of Mondragon. The lounge is open from early morning to late evening. Where better to sit back and bask in the distinctive atmosphere. Pick up a book, newspaper or magazine and relax in one of the comfortable club armchairs. Imagine yourself back in time, in an old-world gentleman’s club (which, in a former life, is exactly what it was). It was here, in a haze of cigar smoke around a table where maps jostled with a brandy decanter and glasses, that generations of city fathers shaped the destiny of Zierikzee.
